Why I love Mountain Bike coaching

Well, it’s been a big 2 weeks…

Life as a mountain bike coach, commissaire and general support person can be hectic.

I was asked to be Commissaire for the Chicks in the Sticks on Sunday the 18th of August. It’s always a great morning of racing at Karingal. I did not hesitate to say yes. It’s a well-run event and great event to support female cycling. There were ladies racing hard and ladies just out there to have fun and be part of a great day.

Then on Wednesday the 21st of August, I was on a plane to Townsville for the World Multi sport championships. I went up to support Kristen who was racing in the Cross duathlon, Cathy in the Cross triathlon and Kellie who raced in both. Kristen became the world champion for her age group. Cathy and Kellie both getting top 10 finishes. I then became Uber driver as Cathy ended up in hospital and Kellie was taken in for X-rays after her race! Summer had also arrived in Townsville.

On Friday we started the return trip home to Walloon. We headed towards Charters Towers, turned left and drove on some section of road that was so long and straight that the road went over the horizon straight ahead. Stopped at Miles and stayed overnight. Saturday morning, breakfast at Miles Creek Café and then home to Walloon. Saturday afternoon a couple of laps of the Walloon track to ensure the legs still worked.

Sunday morning a group of us headed to Hiddenvale https://hiddenvaleadventurepark.com.au/ to practice the 32km course for the Epic. We pushed hard, it’s a tough course in places, good fun was had but we were a little buggered afterwards. We stopped at the Grandchester Pub https://www.grandchesterhotel.com/ on the way home, to refuel with some great food and debrief on the Epic course.

Sunday afternoon with Steve and Kate, we put some work in on the track at Walloon for the next race on 8th September. The track is now cleared, looking good and ready for racing. Track will be open from 9am on Saturday the 31st August, for anyone keen to do a few laps with me. Being a mountain bike coach is a full time adventure, love it!
